Where is Ashland located?

Ashland is located in the beautiful Rogue Valley in Jackson County in southern Oregon and is surrounded by the Siskiyou and Cascade mountain ranges.  It is approximately 15 miles north of the California border, 9 miles from Medford, Oregon, 16 miles from Jacksonville, 90 miles from Crater Lake, 137 miles to Brookings (on the Oregon Pacific coast), 284 miles to Portland and 350 miles from San Francisco, California.  It’s coordinates are 42° 11’ 29” N, 122° 42’ 3” W.

Can I fly into Ashland?  Where is the nearest airport?

There is no commercial airport in Ashland though the nearest airport, Rogue Valley International-Medford Airport (MFR), is located about a 15 minute drive away at 1000 Terminal Spur Rd., Medford, Oregon, 97504.  Flights arrive and depart daily to and from San Francisco, Portland, Seattle, Los Angeles, Denver, Las Vegas and Salt Lake City.  For more information, please visit the Medford airport website here.

Can I get directions to Ashland by car?

Try using Google Maps or Mapquest for directions to your desired address.  Simply click on “get directions” and enter your starting address and ending address for complete directions.

Is there a shuttle service, taxi cab, bus or train in/to Ashland?

There are taxicab and limousine companies that serves Ashland.  Please visit our “Directory” page for company listings.

The area is also served by the Rogue Valley Transportation District, which has bus service to Ashland, Jacksonville, Medford, Central Point and White City.

Though Ashland has a rich history with railroads, it does not currently have any rail service.

Those traveling between the Bay Area and the Rogue Valley may want to consider Shawn’s Rideshare service.

Where should I stay while in Ashland?

This one is very difficult to answer without knowing each individual’s desires, tastes and needs.  Ashland does offer a wide range of options, from the clean and comfortable well known brand name hotels, to charming and unique bed & breakfasts, to rustic vacation rentals in the nearby foothills and mountains – among other great options.  Please be sure to visit our “Where to Stay” page, where you are sure to find accommodations that meet your needs.

What is there to do in Ashland?

Ashland is a town chock full of things to do and we have many of them listed throughout our website.  From world-class theatre, incredible art galleries, fine shopping, and local wineries and breweries to visit, to outstanding outdoor adventures or setting up a picnic at a local park, Ashland has something for everyone.

What is the elevation of Ashland?

Ashland is 1,949 feet above sea level.

What is the population of Ashland?

Ashland’s population as of 2010 was 20,078.

How far is it to Mt. Ashland?

Mt. Ashland is only about 16 miles from downtown Ashland, and it takes roughly 30-40 minutes to drive to the ski resort parking lot.

Why didn’t you include “xxx” spot for your “yyy” section (for example, why didn’t you include The Wild and Scenic hike on the Rogue River in your hiking section)?

We here at Insight to Ashland offer a wide range of fantastic spots and opportunities to enjoy in and near to Ashland.  That said, we have consciously decided not to offer everything that we know about, as part of the fun of getting to know a place is to get out and explore it yourself – ask locals, ask our advertising partners, read books, or just set out on foot, bike or in your car and see where it takes you.  We believe it’s nice to keep a few secrets and let people discover some of the wonders themselves – it’s all part of the exciting journey of discovering the magic of Southern Oregon and Ashland!
